254. Henry Farwell (c. 1605–1670)

Henry Farwell was born about 1605 in England. [1, 25] He died in 1670. [2, 578] He married Olive Welby on 16 April 1629 at St. Botolph’s Church in Boston, Lincolnshire, England. [1, 10,30]

255. Olive Welby (bp. 1604–1692)

Olive Welby, the daughter of Richard and Frances (Buckley) Welby, was baptized in 1604 in Moulton, England. [1, 25] She died about 1 March 1691/2. [3]

Ancestry of Henry Farwell

WILLIAM FARWELL married second Joan Cole on 17 July 1617 in Boston, Lincolnshire, England. [1, 10][4] He was buried on 5 September 1637 in Boston, Lincolnshire, England. [1, 10]

William Farwell, tailor, was made a freeman of Boston on 19 May 1620. He was chosen sergeant at the mace of Boston on 28 June 1631. He surrendered the position due to bodily infirmities on 28 December 1635. [1, 11]

Just prior to Henry’s departure to New England William and Joan and Henry and Olive sold property to Thomas Welby and George Smyth, gentlemen, for 60 pounds by a fine of 9 February 1635/6. They warranted the property against William and Joan and Henry and Olive and the heirs of William forever, suggested that Henry was the sole heir. The proceeds of the property were probably used to finance Henry’s voyage to New England. [1, 10]

William Farwell, tailor of Boston, made his will on 1 Sepember 1639. He mention Simeon, the son of his eldest daughter, his wife Joan, Richard the son of his son Pickerell and Elizabeth, daughter of his eldest daughter. [1, 12]

Joan Farwell made her will on 16 January 1641. She mentioned Symon Clarkson, the grandson of her deceased husband; Rebecca Nixon, the widowed daughter of her deceased husband; Sarah Pickeringe; Elizabeth Collyer; Katherine Kyme, her sister; George Kyme; Kathreen Bowis; William Jackson; Elizabeth Clark. [1, 13]

Children of William Farwell and his first wife:

i. Henry Farwell was born about 1605. He died in 1670. He married Olive Welby.
ii. Sarah Farwell married Symon Claxon on 5 April 1630 in Boston, Lincolnshire, England.
iii. Rebecca Farwell married Unknown Nixon.
iv. Mary Farwell married Richard Pickeringe on 26 February 1632 in Boston, Lincolnshire, England.


Henry and Olive came to New England with their children Elizabeth and John in about 1636. They settled in Concord and moved to Chelmsford about 1655. [1, 25]

Henry was chosen deacon of the Chelmsford church on 16 (9) 1660. [1, 25][2, 21]

Henry Farwell, tailor of Chelmsford, made his will on 12 July 1670. He left bequests to his wife Olive; his sons John and Joseph; his daughters Mary Bates, Olive Spaulding and Elizabeth Wilbor; Joseph’s wife Hannah. Inventory was presented on his estates on 5 August 1670. [1, 26–28]

Children of Henry Farwell and Olive Welby:

i. Elizabeth Farwell was baptized on 27 May 1630 in Boston, Lincolnshire, England. [1, 10] She died on 9 November 1670.  [1, 39] She married Joseph Wilbor about 1651. [1, 39] Joseph, the son of Samuel and Ann (Bradford) Wilborn, was born in England and died on 27 August 1691. [1, 39]

ii. Samuel Farwell was baptized on 9 June 1633 in Boston, Lincolnshire, England. He was buried there on 20 June 1633. [1, 10]

iii. John Farwell was baptized on 25 October 1635 in Boston, Lincolnshire, England. [1, 10] He died before 15 September 1686, when his will was probated. [1, 39] He married first Sarah Wheeler on 4 November 1658 in Concord. [1, 39] Sarah, the daughter of Timothy and Jane Wheeler, was born on 22 June 1640 in Concord and died on 23 May 1662. [1, 39] John married second Sarah, the daughter of Reverend John Fiske of Chelmsford. [1, 39]

John was a farmer. [1, 39]

iv. Ensign Joseph Farwell was born on 26 February 1640/1 in Concord. [1, 41] He died on 31 December 1722. [1, 41] He married Hannah, the daughter of Isaac and Mary (Stearns) Learned, on 15 December 1666 in Chelmsford. [1, 41, 25 December][5, 26]

Joseph was a large land owner. [1, 41]

v. Mary Farwell was born say 1642 in Concord. She died on 7 March 1713/4 in Chelmsford. She married John Bates.

vi. Olive Farwell was born about 1642 in Concord. [1, 46] She married Benjamin Spaulding of Concor, on 30 October 1668 in Chelmsford. [1, 46][5, 26] Benjamin, the son of Edward and Rachel Spaulding, was born on 7 April 1643. [1, 46]

Benjamin and Olive moved to Canterbury, Windham County, Connecticut. [1, 46]
